BS 7671 Amendment 4: Is Your Business Ready?
The countdown is on. BS 7671:2018 + Amendment 4:2026 is coming into effect on 15 October 2026.
Published on 15 April 2026, Amendment 4, also known as the new Orange Book, introduces important updates to the IET Wiring Regulations and brings together previous amendments and changes to help improve electrical safety, compliance and best practice across the industry.
From 15 October 2026, Amendment 4 will become the applicable standard for new electrical installations, additions, alterations and periodic inspections.
For businesses, facilities managers and duty holders, now is the time to understand what this means and make sure your electrical systems and planned works are ready.
What Does Amendment 4 Mean for Your Business?
Changes to the wiring regulations can have a direct impact on how electrical work is designed, installed, inspected and tested.
Businesses responsible for commercial premises should ensure that their electrical contractors are familiar with the latest requirements and are prepared to work to BS 7671:2018 + Amendment 4:2026 when required.
It is particularly important to consider any electrical works or inspections planned around the October implementation date.
How Can You Prepare?
With the implementation date fast approaching, businesses and facilities managers should consider:
- Reviewing planned electrical works to understand whether they will fall under the new requirements.
- Checking contractor competence and ensuring your electrical contractors are familiar with Amendment 4.
- Reviewing upcoming EICRs and periodic inspections and understanding which edition of BS 7671 will apply.
- Keeping electrical records and certification up to date to demonstrate ongoing compliance.
- Planning ahead rather than waiting until the new requirements come into effect.
Taking action now can help prevent unnecessary delays, additional costs and potential compliance issues further down the line.
